Very lucky man! Given the hunting scene, and the split starting at the muzzle, I'm going to guess a mud plug. He may have inadvertently used it as a "walking stick".

Its interesting isn't it? Just a plug of mud did that? I was looking at the rifle and it looks like a sporter or varminter type to me. Now sporters look quite light to me, obviously if you are hauling the thing miles over hill and dale you want something lighter.

Not knowing much about guns I was wondering if that could have played a significant part in how it exploded.

Then I was thinking, it might be possible that the mud plug had been in there a while, perhaps from the last time he took it out. No way of knowing I guess. But it could have and maybe it was dried out and was harder as a result.

I went boar hunting with Dad and his friend. Turns out 'friend' wasn't too sharp with his firearms. We got to the sight-in area, he drops his .270 round in the muds, picks it up, and shoves it in his brand-new A-Bolt faster than I could react. Lucky for him (and Dad & I), it jammed the round before the bolt could close and it wouldn't back back out. He didn't bring a cleaing rod, nor did Dad's .308 or my -06 rod fit his little .270 bore. Meant that 'friend' was out of the shooting business that weekend. I felt better he didn't have a trigger to pull with me around...

Odd the cleaning rods for a .308 or a 30-06 wouldn't fit, center fire rifle rods are pretty much universal fitting just about anything from a 22 on up. Even my high end match rods are universal. The only caliber specific cleaning set-ups I was aware of were the pull through cable or snake types but those aren't rods. Only rod like that I have heard of is for the 17 caliber as it has to be smaller.

He was tracking bigfoot. Poor guy actually had the monster in his sights. What he doesnt know, is that some of us CIA guys were onto him, and we plugged his rifle before he left on his trip.

I've known of guys shooting the rod out of a black powder rifle. It just blows out.
